An eminent writer-director, Ratnakar Matkari died late on May 17 at a hospital in the city from COVID-19. Mr. Matkari was 81 years old.

After being hospitalized for routine check-up at Godrej Hospital, Mr. Matkari was shifted to Seven Hills Hospital when his COVID-19 examination result came out positive. He breathed his last around midnight of 17 May

Shri Matkari is considered one of the most versatile writers in the rich heritage of Marathi literature. More than the longevity of his artistic period - with his first one-act play Vesi Manche aired on All India Radio in 1955 when he was a teenager - it is his wide range of mastery over various forms and stories by connoisseurs has been accepted. For more than six decades, Mr. Matkari emerged as a stand-out writer who handled various forms of writing primarily to the Maharastra middle class. While his mastery in thrillers (good cattha) earned him praise, he remained a playwright at heart. This is reflected in the fact that he has more than 90 plays - of which more than 20 are child plays - to his credit. His published literature also includes short stories, compilation of essays and his theater autobiography Maje Rangpreg.

His most popular works of art include plays such as Aranyak (a blank verse-based format based on the concluding chapter of the Mahabharata), folklore 78 (depicting Dalit life), Dubhung, Ashwamedha, Jawai Manjha Bhala, Chara Daivas Premache, Ghar Tighanache . Hawe, Khol Khal Paani and Indira. In addition, his children's plays such as Alabatta Galabatia and Nimma Shamma Raksha were recently revived.

Despite his success as a playwright, Mr. Matkari became synonymous with the suspense thriller genre in which he dominated with his stories and screenplays. In Marathi literature it is considered a milestone in the Gahe-Bahagae style, both as a book and a television serial to which he adapted it. He was proud to admit that since writing was his "profession", he would dedicate "eight hours a day, six days a week" to writing.

Prashant Damle, who played the protagonist in four titles, who was seen by Mr. Matka, including Cher Divas Premache, who watched over 1,000 shows, called Mr. Matkari "an all-rounder". He said, 'I am very lucky to be able to work with him in four plays of various forms. I consider working with him as one of the important points of my acting career, ”Mr. Damle told The Hindu.

“The abundance of his talent is reflected in the fact that he can easily switch between different art forms. She mastered all art forms, from social issues to Balanatya (children's plays), from Achhe Kathe (thriller stories) to light romantic dramas. He was truly a true all-rounder. With his death, not only Marathi, but the Indian theater fraternity has lost a prolific writer and a pillar of support, ”he said.

He has received many awards over the years. His film Investments won the Best Marathi Feature Film at the National Film Awards. In addition, he belongs to a select band of artists awarded by Sangeet Natak Akademi and Sahitya Akademi.
